2006: Top 50

1. Camera Obscura “Lloyd I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken”

Because it sums up 2006. And is brilliant.

2. The Killers “When You Were Young”

Because of that bit before the last chorus where it actually sounds like the thing’s gonna take off. Because I’d written them off. Because it’s a bit like ‘Born To Run.’ Because it’s pure, unashamed, out and out pop music like they used to make in the olden days. No novelty tricks, no gimmicks, no silliness, just massive tunes and wall of sound genius.

3. The Similou “All This Love”

Now THAT’S a pop song. UK record-buying public, shame on you. Having had it played since late 2005 and then releasing it just too late for the summer rush just after the buzz had died down might have had something to do with it. Euphoric.

4. Hot Chip “Over and Over”

Like a monkey with a miniature cymbal. How can you NOT interpretive dance to that? Brilliant.

5. Franz Ferdinand “The Fallen/Lindsey Wells”

Bizarrely, given I had to look up whether Franz had actually released any singles this year rather than last, they turned out to be the band that gave me the most trouble in not breaking my ‘one band, one single’ rule. ‘Eleanor Put Your Boots On’ is as near to perfect a little ditty as they come. This wins on three counts, though: it’s a double-A-side (always GREAT), with a great non-album track; THAT Justice remix – just nuts; and it’s just a whole lot of fun in exactly the way the best pop music should be.

6. Cat Power “The Greatest”

This is a pop song from another time, or another planet, or both. It it more intelligent, more moving, and more inexplicably brilliant than the five songs above it in this list. As a pop song, however, it’s just very slightly less satisfactory.

7. Girls Aloud “Something Kinda Ooh”

Why hasn’t there been more pop music like this released this year? I have been massively unexcited by pop this year. Nothing has grabbed me. Except this, obviously. And it’s not even anywhere near their best single.

8. Liam Frost & The Slowdown Family “The Mourners of St Pauls”

The only song in my top 10 that I will concede is not a ‘proper pop song.’ It is also so ridiculously, painfully beautiful and pretty that to leave it out would be a crime.

9. Muse “Starlight”

It’s Queen playing a long lost Abba song. As has been said before. Seriously, what’s not to love?

10.Metric “Monster Hospital”

Bam-chick-a-bam, chick-a-boom-boom-boom
Sha-lang-sha-lang-boom, sha-lang-sha-long-boom
There is also a MSTRKRFT remix. Need I say more?
