Top 50 Singles 2009 – The Top Ten

What’s that sound? Fanfare? Trumpets? Hysterical screaming? No, it’s actually tumbleweed. Festive tumbleweed, perhaps. Everyone’s pretty much in a holiday mood now, I’m assuming, so now is clearly the best time to sneak out the much-anticipated (HA!) conclusion to my annual rundown of tunes of the good variety.

Behind the click below are my top 10 tracks of the year. And you can listen to a (rather pitiful) 42 of the 50 tracks over here via Spotify.

If anyone’s paying attention, what do you reckon to my choices? Too obvious? Not obvious enough? Most importantly – what have I missed? What’s been floating your 2009-shaped boat that should be in here?

So, here goes…

Annie – Songs Remind Me Of You

The world of pop would surely be a better place if Annie/her record label(s) could get their act together. This is technically the third single from the near-mythical Don’t Stop album, which has been being worked on since late 2006 and due a release for over a year.

Not a new song then, technically, but a new video. Like the vid for the excellent Anthonio, it’s a bit half-arsed, filmed on a photoshoot in a spare five minutes between assembling necklaces made out of lipsticks (cool). Thankfully the song is still awesome – and Don’t Stop even has an official release date (early October). Who knows, it may even happen…

Annie – Anthonio

This is incredibly late for the simple reason that I refused to believe that the horrible shoddy video below was the official version.

Anyway, I’m bored of caring now because this is so plainly one of the best singles of this year that it needs a post on here. Why’s it ace? It’s ace because it’s got that delicate, hands in the hair, beautiful balearic type thing going on, rather than the second rate electro pastiche nonsense that previous single ‘I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me’ was all about.

I suppose in a sense it’s to Annies credit that the video doesn’t go the obvious route of riding around on scooters and frolicking in some Mediterranean paradise, but anyway, rubbish video, great tune.

Here’s a bunch of videos and pseudo-videos for some upcoming singles you might be interested in.

As ever, judgement is reserved ’til the week of release, but safe to say there’s a few goodies in here.

Let’s kick off with a bit of Tilly and the Wall…

Single of the Week: Neon Neon – I Told Her on Alderaan/ Trick For Treat

On a sunny day, it can occasionally seem like Gruff Rhys can do no wrong. It’s a sunny day today, and he’s back with another cut from his Boom Bip-collaboration Neon Neon’s near-flawless debut. And it’s a double A-side. The Star Wars-referencing A-side is the gem here, an 80s-envisaged space-age romp that scales pop highs the Super Furries haven’t managed in about 10 years. The live clip above really doesn’t do it justice, so I’ll endeavour to replace it ASAP.

As a bonus, here’s Har Mar Superstar prancing around the Glastonbury stage to Trick for Treat, while Gruff has a rest. Much as he was probably doing when he should have been out making Proper Videos…

Other good stuff lies below…

Time for some more upcoming and worth a look…

Since I’ve finally caught up with the weekly reviews, I thought I’d do a bit of a round-up of some interesting videos/tracks doing the rounds that are coming out over the next few months. A whole bunch of vids await if you click ‘read more’ below.

Featured tracks include a bit of looking ahead with new ones from Annie and Aly & AJ, the best Eurovision entry in recent memory from Sebastien Tellier, routinely great pop from Robyn, Kylie and, um, Ashlee Simpson, Jamie Lidell dancing with a unicorn, Princess Superstar getting saucy like it’s 2003, and some more dandy tracks from Santogold, Justice, Chromeo and Keren Ann.

Comments and thoughts welcome: loving any of these tracks? Hating them? What other upcoming releases are you looking forward to?

I’m, as always, reserving comment until the week of release… enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »
