Top 75 tracks, 2010, part 1

So… even by sticking to the usual rules (no tracks by the same artist – apart from guest appearances), and by being fairly ruthless with some overplayed pop hits that I liked a lot but didn’t feel like writing about again, I still couldn’t fit my tracks of the year into a top 50. For the first time ever. Does this mean 2010 is the best year for music in years? I’m not sure. I’ve certainly been fairly obsessively keeping track of things this year, even if I haven’t written as much, which probably helps.

Anyway, some classics in the long journey ahead, but to kick things off, for the first time, here are my tracks of the year, #75-#51. We might get down to the 30s by the end of the week…

Goldfrapp – Rocket

It seems like upcoming fifth album Rocket will be a return to the chart-friendly electro-pop that Goldfrapp had settled into before the minor pastoral sidestep that was Seventh Tree. No bad thing, really, especially as they’ve taken the sense of fun that characterised much of their last album and stuck it on top of some tasty synthy sounds.

Rocket is an initially unassuming beast, sounding a bit flimsy to start with, but having lived with it for a month or so, it definitely worms its way into your subconscious. Like a musical wormy thing.

The video features the best use of a massive truck in pop since Tatu’s Not Gonna Get Us. The massive truck in this video has a massive pink rocket on the back of it and Alison in the driving seat. Make of that what you will…

Top 50 Singles of 2008 (10-6)

Fact of the day: 90% of my top ten singles of 2008 had female singers. Only 60% of the top 50 though. I’m not totally against male vocals, y’know..

Here’s Numbers 10 to 6 in my countdown. The rest in a couple of hours…

Catch-up Time! Part 2 – June 2008

Single of the Week: Mystery Jets – Two Doors Down

Despite recent confirmation that they’re still a bit crap live, this is my second single of the week for Mystery Jets this year. While it lacks the subtle charms of ‘Young Love’, it’s clearly a fabtastic pop stomper that throws everything into the mix (including potentially lethal sax solos) and comes out with something that sounds pretty much like Summer 2008 in a box. Sorry Lykke…

New Releases 14th April 2008

Single of the Week: Ladyhawke – Back Of The Van
This is not the most innovative single released this week, nor is it the most outright beautiful. It is, however, the one that made me sit up, almost spit out my coffee, and go ‘YES!’ It’s derivative in oh so many ways.. the video is all Pat Benetar, the vocals are Stevie Nicks all over, there’s modern touches borrowed from Feist… but it all gels into something that works perfectly. A refreshingly non-ironic take on the 80s, for once, and a deserved best of a good bunch this week. She’s signed to Modular and plays the Camden Crawl this weekend – catch her now, as she’s surely a star in the making.
