Top 75 tracks, 2010, part 1

So… even by sticking to the usual rules (no tracks by the same artist – apart from guest appearances), and by being fairly ruthless with some overplayed pop hits that I liked a lot but didn’t feel like writing about again, I still couldn’t fit my tracks of the year into a top 50. For the first time ever. Does this mean 2010 is the best year for music in years? I’m not sure. I’ve certainly been fairly obsessively keeping track of things this year, even if I haven’t written as much, which probably helps.

Anyway, some classics in the long journey ahead, but to kick things off, for the first time, here are my tracks of the year, #75-#51. We might get down to the 30s by the end of the week…

Marina & the Diamonds – Hollywood (& Fenech-Soler Remix)

In brief: Appropriately great track to ‘officially’ launch this year’s Florence. Namechecking oneself in a ‘first’ single should be obligatory. Excellent, almost slightly creepy perma-grinning video. I’m mostly here for the remix though…
Best Bit: “Actually, my name’s Marina”

Late of the Pier – Blueberry

Right, on with 2010. Happy New Year! More occasional flurries of links to music videos new, nearly new, and occasionally really old. But all new to me. This week will mostly be focussing on stuff I’ve missed over the xmas period. Here’s the first…

In brief: Spacey Midlands Prince-aping poppers finally get Mr. E. Alkan to twiddle the knobs in a way that successfully articulates the many mad ideas in their many mad heads. At the same time, they go a bit more prog. Mixed, yet captivating, results ensue.
They say: [On an unspecified new song, which may well have been Blueberry] “It starts with The Snowman, goes into the Beatles, turns into Ultravox, and then goes into like Soulwax remixing Daft Punk at the end. Fucking weird song.”
Best Bit: The last minute or so. Just weird noises, really.

New La Roux, video-free legends, genre confusion, and bleeps

Let’s kick off with a bit of audio-only action from two pop scene stalwarts who it’s still very much OK to love. First up, WHY on earth is there no video for what is surely Saint Etienne’s most pop single in years. I guess it’s the same reason their latest best of has been repeatedly delayed (I wrote at length about it months ago) and that people ignore Tales from Turnpike House. Yes, it’s because the world is WRONG. All of it, all of you. Anyway, there’s also some more Xenomania-assisted tuneage from them Pet Shop Boys, for your video-free enjoyment. I’ve only given it a couple of “spins” but it’s ticking the boxes so far. It’s quite camp and silly. What, really?

On with the show below, kicked off by that La Roux vid I was waiting for last week…
