Top 50 Singles 2009 – The Top Ten

What’s that sound? Fanfare? Trumpets? Hysterical screaming? No, it’s actually tumbleweed. Festive tumbleweed, perhaps. Everyone’s pretty much in a holiday mood now, I’m assuming, so now is clearly the best time to sneak out the much-anticipated (HA!) conclusion to my annual rundown of tunes of the good variety.

Behind the click below are my top 10 tracks of the year. And you can listen to a (rather pitiful) 42 of the 50 tracks over here via Spotify.

If anyone’s paying attention, what do you reckon to my choices? Too obvious? Not obvious enough? Most importantly – what have I missed? What’s been floating your 2009-shaped boat that should be in here?

So, here goes…

MSTRKRFT – Bounce (ft. NORE & Isis)

Pleased to see this track’s getting a UK single release, having been with us for the best part of a year. Following on from the slick, radio-friendly smoochery of Heartbreaker, this one is back on more familiar territory – dirty electro, here accompanied by some fittingly filthy vocalising from an assortment of guests, led by NORE. Another version out there adds a bit of Pitbull to the mix. In any case, it’s all excellent dancefloor-enticing stuff. Ha. Ha. Ha. Haaa.

MSTRKRFT ft. John Legend – Heartbreaker

It’s been a while – please accept my humblest apologies. Normal service will be resumed shortly, but in the meantime, here’s one that’s been around a bit, but out soon and with a nice video and all that.

First, I’m surprised I’m posting something with John Legend all over it. Horrible sickly smooth vocals and a bit of a twunt to boot, so not normally my cuppa. Here though, he miraculously sounds pretty ok. Stunner.

Next, well, those MSTRKRFT boys have come along way since DFA1979 haven’t they? From dirty rock, to moderately grimy (if safe) electro, to this almost laid back smooth electropop. Not that I’m complaining though. This is excellent summery stuff, and the video’s pretty sweet too. Enjoy.

Metric – Help I’m Alive

I’ve always had a soft spot for Metric, largely down to Emily Haines’ beautiful vocals, which always struck me as pretty suitable for music somewhat more pop than her own. It was a remix (an utterly brilliant remix) that first convinced me to pay attention, and it’s recently been another one that reminded me of the pop potential of that voice. Back to the original though: for me, it’s the closest to pop (without the aid of remixers) that Metric have yet come. It retains their distinctiveness while emerging from the slightly shadowy, gloomy territory previously occupied. Good stuff, but that Twelves remix is still what it’s all about…
