Top 75 tracks, 2010, part 1

So… even by sticking to the usual rules (no tracks by the same artist – apart from guest appearances), and by being fairly ruthless with some overplayed pop hits that I liked a lot but didn’t feel like writing about again, I still couldn’t fit my tracks of the year into a top 50. For the first time ever. Does this mean 2010 is the best year for music in years? I’m not sure. I’ve certainly been fairly obsessively keeping track of things this year, even if I haven’t written as much, which probably helps.

Anyway, some classics in the long journey ahead, but to kick things off, for the first time, here are my tracks of the year, #75-#51. We might get down to the 30s by the end of the week…

New Releases 25th August 2008

Single of the Week: Lykke Li – Breaking It Up
Third brilliant single in a row, and on the evidence of her live shows this is only the beginning, for my undisputed artist of the year so far. There’s an oddness to her style which some might characterise as twee, but to me Lykke Li is a serious star in the making. There’s a reserve evident on many of the songs on Youth Novels that it seems like she’s itching to break out of. This re-worked version of the more mannered album track could mark the beginnings of that process. Where she goes next is anyone’s guess, but hopefully it will involve translating more of her irrepresible live energy onto record. I’ll be happy whatever, but she deserves to reach as big an audience as possible.

I’ve run out of superlatives, to be honest, so here’s an extra treat. The clip below begins with a bit of Lykke guesting live with Kleerup on their superb collaboration, Until We Bleed (full version without video here). It then segues into another, slightly more well-known Kleerup track…

Oh to have been there! Still, it’s been a good week…

Catch-up Time! Part 2 – June 2008

So, so, so.  Sunny, sunny June. A long, hazy, pleasant month with lots of good memories.  And lots of singles to catch up on.  Here’s the pick of them, including Single of the Week cuts from Mystery Jets (again), Frankmusik, The School, Weezer and Ladyhawke (again). Enjoy…

Single of the Week: Mystery Jets – Two Doors Down

Despite recent confirmation that they’re still a bit crap live, this is my second single of the week for Mystery Jets this year. While it lacks the subtle charms of ‘Young Love’, it’s clearly a fabtastic pop stomper that throws everything into the mix (including potentially lethal sax solos) and comes out with something that sounds pretty much like Summer 2008 in a box. Sorry Lykke…
