Beth Ditto – I Wrote The Book

As anyone who heard last year’s Cruel Intentions will know, the Beth Ditto/ Simian Mobile Disco combination works quite nicely. Beth’s voice is actually rather pretty when layered over some tasteful downbeat dance music, rather than shouting over some predictable old garage rock.

Anyhow, she’s about to release her debut self-titled solo EP, again with help from those SMD chaps. Here’s the first taster from it. Not going to change the world, but enjoyable enough.

Simian Mobile Disco – Cruel Intentions

This one didn’t really grab me at first. I’m not particularly fussed about Beth Ditto, who adds her distinctive but rather samey vocals to this mid-paced electro number. It’s got a certain charm though, that works its way through on multiple listens. Background music-y, but not in a bad way? Really.

Simian Mobile Disco – Audacity of Huge

There’s a bit of a whiff of Novelty Record about this, especially given the video’s more expensive take on the YouTube fanvid tradition of over-literal video readings.

It’s pretty good fun, with a vocal from Yeasayer’s Chris Keating sounding nicely at home in SMD’s happy-electro-pop hands. It never quite… goes anywhere… though. Needs a more brutal remix. Anyone care to point me in the direction of one?
